How to practice interval ear training

Interval ear training is the practice of learning to recognize the distance between two notes by listening. This includes identifying intervals such as seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, and beyond. Developing this skill helps you recognize musical patterns and play music more confidently.

Work through the exercises in each category above. Focus on hearing the sound and character of each interval rather than guessing, and repeat exercises until they feel familiar before moving on.

It can be helpful to sing the notes of an interval after hearing it. Try singing the two notes one by one, starting with the lowest one, and notice how far apart they are. This helps you internalize the sound and makes the intervals easier to recognize by ear.

A common way to identify intervals by ear is to associate them with songs. For example, a descending minor third matches the opening of "Hey Jude". You can explore more examples in the interval song chart. Keep in mind, some intervals are easier to identify because of their unique sound.

Short and regular practice sessions are more effective than occasional long ones. Practicing for 10 minutes each day helps you gradually improve your listening skills. As you become more experienced, you will start to recognize intervals more quickly and accurately.
